Tetris Wouldn't Triumph at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

As any major honors show approaches, there’s always a demand for introducing fresh award types to honor underappreciated efforts and delight the spirits of enthusiasts who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer made the case supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. So would strategy board titles, which is someone's personal cause. Yet I need to apologize in advance when I prioritize just as with other dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request remains most pressing and significant. The demand is this: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Organizing Gaming Categories

Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and inevitably start arguments concluding with vague boundaries. It's understandable that cinema institutions avoid this approach. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise within the realm of gaming, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Present Award Structure

Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature classifications covering Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Collectively, these six categories successfully include a lot of ground, allowing placement for most games within them.

This doesn't apply to brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles in a particular game, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios of a third title. Where could they possibly go among existing types? Unfortunately, nowhere.

The Representation Problem

Many instances occur excellent brain-teasers released every year that have no home during gaming ceremonies, except when they manage to fit for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked completely in 2014
  • Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
  • Well-received sorting experience received no acknowledgment recently
  • Limited numbers of brain-teasers barely qualified for niche award types

Value of Brain-Teasers

Commonly they're small games, yet the craft in brain-teasers is of massive significance. Iconic mobile puzzle games stand as most popular titles worldwide and have been for an extended period.

The iconic tile-matching title challenges well-known building titles claiming status as best-selling game of all time; it additionally competes for best game of all time. Puzzle games are foundational for gaming as medium, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. You could fill a field of five interesting, varied, worthy titles every year with ease — perhaps, with difficulty, since numerous excellent numerous deserving experiences.

To emphasize again, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the demanding boundary of video game design, producing among the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to cinema stunt performers, they warrant appreciation. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
