A recent study reveals that people who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop traditional lifestyle regimens.
Published data in a prominent health publication shows that while overweight individuals can lose about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.
"Users purchasing such drugs should be aware of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a reversion to starting mass in about 18 months.
Comparing Therapies
The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
The team note that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone typically have a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.
Understanding the Quick Regain
Experts suggest the way of the injections explains the heightened rebound.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal could lead to the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also lessen sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating far more likely."
An Ongoing Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, considering the significant potential of relapse, the treatment might need to be long-term.
This perspective is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch activating and I was suddenly extremely hungry," recalled a patient.
This difficulty is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Use
Recent estimates suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is greater among females than men.
- The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
- Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, researchers caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
