Australia's captain Expected to Feature a Major Role in Ashes Series

Test match action

The pace bowler has claimed 309 wickets in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

The Australian selection chief George Bailey has stated that skipper Cummins will be a central figure in the upcoming Ashes series.

There were concerns that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from the Australian camp suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the extended contest set to start on November 21 in the WACA.

He revealed that his recovery is on track and felt positive about the likelihood of participating.

"We know that time is getting short and multiple considerations around that, not just the back issue, but other factors as well," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. We firmly believe that he will feature a significant role. Ideally starting in Perth. Should that not happen, we'll adjust."

Injury History

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against both Asian and Trans-Tasman rivals in the previous weeks after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

He has a history of back injuries, with setbacks in multiple past seasons leading to absences from multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the contest.

Bailey noted that there was no confirmation if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "getting tight" for him to be fit for the first Test.

Backup Options

In case of absence, former captain Steve Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

He labeled it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "ideally positioned to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an batting and bowling option," Bailey explained.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs in any case. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for 24 more hours, the choice was made to take a cautious route."
